Hitchhiking through Degrowth
2025-09-27Let’s go again. For a third year on row I did a kind of visual balance of my year in various dimensions. This time around, I added “Frameworks” to last year’s dimensions of Emissions, Books, Sports, and Podcasts.
Globally, 2025 was quite similar to the last three. My routines have been similar during this phase of my life, except for this year’s reduction in Books read. Anyway, this exercise is more about content and visuals than numbers or goals.
That said, here goes the full image and, in each further section, some details and links to materials.

Carbon Emissions
2025 saw a small 3% rise from 4,93 to 5.09 tons of my personal CO2 emissions. Still more than double the sustainable limit per capita defined by the Paris agreement to cap global warming to +1.5 ºC. I would need to go full vegetarian, sell one of our cars and reduce flying to 3-hour round-trip flights every 5 years… which would not compromise health or basic needs!

In 2026 I already booked two flights to European destinations (half a ton each) and a work visit to China (3.8 tons). Flying in 2026 alone will be comparable to all my emissions of 2025, making my total annual emissions rise to the equivalent of four per capita annual sustainable limit.
These are numbers, not judgments! We justify the decisions we make with the argument of necessity or any totally valid ones. That will not change the numbers themselves and the impact of our decisions. My goal here is to help me, and others accept them and integrate them in our decisions.
Books Read with Links
As said above, I read fifteen instead of the planned twenty-four books in 2025. Anyway, there was quality inside this smaller quantity. Especially the Autobiography of Pope Francis, or the little but intense “The man who planted trees” or the fight for the rights of American women in “When Everything Changed”.

Science fiction was the genre I read the most in 2025, like an always-present background of traveling in other possible worlds, not deeply but naturally. Check below the full list and links in case you want to read them.

Podcasts Listened with Links
Do you believe that I listened to almost the same seventy-four hours of Podcasts in 2025 as in 2024? I knew my routine was kind of fixed, but I hope it’s a coincidence and not a sign of full boredom 🙂

Anyway, this year I discovered and loved to hear the Jim Rutt Show. It’s an older, super direct guy who was in multiple early internet companies and then moved to a complex system, sharing is life visions. The result is probably hard to connect to for the majority of people, but to me, it was like listening to myself talking from the future (and smarter). Loved it.
The other Podcasts are the same as 2024, with the exception of “Harcode History” that made me think I want to find some Podcasts about history in 2026.
Here goes the list of my other Podcasts from 2025.
- Art of Accomplishment – Deep conversations on Self-Awareness, Emotions and Coaching.
- Simplifying Complexity – Deep Wxplorations on Complex Systems and Science.
- Ted Talks Daily – Short episodes on positive-minded stories around the World
- Science Quickly – Science short news.
- A.I. Daily Breakdown – News and trends on Artificial Intelligence.
- Masters of Scale – Business Stories from top Entrepreneurs.
CARBON EMISSION: How to track data
In this case, I used different data sources and approaches for each carbon category. For Work Travel and Vacations I simply know how many flights or driving km I have done since it’s a few events a year. For the Commute, meaning moving around in my daily or weekend routine, I wrote down the total km made by our two family cars. For the Food, I made some assumptions about my diet of low meat. For the Energy I measured the total electricity and gas consumed in our house using the grid meters. For the Assets, I made a list of the biggest things I own (house, cars, electronics) and used some online calculations to transform that into an annual impact.
Each data measured needed then to be transformed into tonnes of Carbon with its method, making assumptions like unit per km driven or per kWh of electricity. I used many online sources that I learned from this lifestyle pilot I did in 2021. The site includes a googlesheet we built so you can try on your own!
BOOKS: How to track data
I use Goodreads to take note of all the books I have read and want to read. I also set an annual goal on the number of books and it shows how I am doing on that. You can also see which books your friends in Goodreads are reading.
I followed these instructions to extract the data to excel. It includes reading dates, year of publication, author and number of pages of all the books in your goodreads. The data is not perfect so I needed to some manual cleaning and completion.
PODCASTS: How to track data
For Podcast I use the Mobile App Podcast Republic that includes a statistics per period, that can be annual.
SPORTS: How to track data
For the Sports data, I tracked my activities with a Samsung Watch (both bicycle and swimming) that connects automatically to the Strava App.
